Transgender people can be found in every corner of our country, but for practical reasons most of them live in larger cities. The capital of Poland is without doubt one such place - it has the highest concentration of transgender people in the country.

Due to their unique psychophysiological traits and attractive bodies, people with a confirmed case of sexual dimorphism are extremely desirable on the dating market. High interest naturally leads to intense searches and a large number of, often not particularly elevated, messages landing in inboxes on dating platforms.

Want to know how to meet a transgender person in Warsaw and how to do it with the respect they expect? This text is a practice-based guide containing local details, proven places and concrete advice on how to make first contact.

What Gender Incongruence Actually Is According to ICD-11

In a medical context, trans people have not always been able to count on proper treatment. The way this concept was classified, as well as the way it was perceived and communicated by scientists and doctors, has changed over the years. According to the current classification of the World Health Organization - Gender Incongruence of Adolescence and Adulthood it is:

...a marked and persistent incongruence between an individual麓s experienced gender and the assigned sex, which often leads to a desire to 鈥榯ransition'...

The key change in ICD-11 is that gender incongruence was moved from the chapter Mental and behavioral disorders to a new chapter Conditions related to sexual health. This was a fundamental shift in approach that permanently changed the stance of the scientific community. The WHO emphasises that:

...trans-related and gender diverse identities are not conditions of mental ill-health, and that classifying them as such can cause enormous stigma

The classification also replaced the outdated diagnostic categories of ICD-10, including the entire former understanding of what "transsexualism" was. In both scientific and everyday language the phrase "transsexual person" still appears very often; it has replaced the outright undesirable and hurtful term "shemale". Parallel to it functions the broader term "transgender person". In practice, on dating sites, in articles and in ordinary conversations both terms interweave.

It is not absolutely crucial which of the above words you use. When addressing transgender people the most important thing is respect and respect for their boundaries. Any refusal of further contact should always be accepted with dignity.

In large European cities, and especially in Warsaw, the visibility of this community is clearly higher than in smaller centres. Although meeting a transgender person in the Tri-City or other Polish cities can already be a very pleasant experience, in the capital you will find not only a significant number of people, but also a greater density of events, permanent support groups and even more favourable conditions for maintaining the desired anonymity.

Warsaw - the Ideal Place to Meet a Transgender Person

Warsaw has for decades been the largest hub of the LGBTQ+ and transgender community in Poland. This is where things happened that later spread across the whole country.

On 10 December 1985, at the Department of Sexology and Pathology of Interpersonal Bonds of the Medical Centre for Postgraduate Education in Warsaw, the first formally documented meeting of transgender people took place. The record of the discussion later appeared in the book by Kazimierz Imieli艅ski and Stanis艂aw Dulko "Apocalypse of Gender".

On the website of the Trans-Fuzja foundation, Edyta Baker wrote an article titled "Our Transgender History, or How Polish Trans Activism Began", in which she describes several major events that shaped today's Poland.

The first Trans Party took place on 7 November 2004 in the now-defunct Manekin pub at Rondo ONZ in Warsaw. The tiny venue barely held more than 30 people who took part in the meeting. It is this period - autumn 2004 - that should probably be considered the beginning of trans activism in Poland. It was then that, at the same time and place, people met who would set the tone for subsequent actions, ideas and initiatives, and whose effect would for the first time be lasting and produce concrete results.

From that moment the path to fulfilling the erotic fantasies of Poles about the domestic population of transgender women that had been born with the first VHS porn tapes began to shorten.

The Trans-Fuzja Foundation itself - the first organisation of its kind in Poland - was founded precisely in Warsaw. The founding act was signed in February 2008 and the court registered it in July of the same year. To this day it runs support groups, advocacy and education in the area of gender topics. Today the list of local points also includes QueerMuzeum Warszawa at Marsza艂kowska 83/23 - a grassroots space collecting documents, artefacts and other testimonies of non-heteronormative Polish history.

Compared with the already very friendly Tri-City, in the capital there are simply more options. A greater number of parties and permanent support groups as well as more spaces where you can appear without prior preparation. At the same time the pace is faster and anonymity greater. This has both advantages and disadvantages.

How to Meet a Transgender Person in Warsaw via the Internet?

The simplest and most frequently chosen route is dating platforms open to the transgender community. When looking for a suitable platform, pay attention to the possibility of selecting gender during registration. It is not worth wasting time on a place that does not offer at least a general "trans" option. Ideally the portal also allows a more precise definition of the user's actual gender. On Wink3r we have opted for the main option "transgender" and an additional descriptive phrase thanks to which transgender people can easily define themselves as a trans woman, trans man, or perhaps fluidgender.

After choosing the right medium, start first with yourself. Appropriate photos and a well-formulated description will help you avoid initial rejection even before you get to conversation. Also give yourself time and do not write unnecessary messages the moment you enter the platform. Browse the profiles of people of your own gender who are already friends with the trans people who interest you. Learn from them what may be liked, what photos and descriptions they have, and what trends prevail in that environment. The same rules apply here as on ordinary social media - what is viral on Facebook will not necessarily find its audience on X.

Inviting a Crossdresser on a Date

The online space gives room for expressing one's true identity. One should expect that many of the profiles found there are not only transgender women and men, but also crossdressers (popularly abbreviated "CD"), who usually avoid an official coming-out with their fetish. In broad generalisation, the latter more often seek anonymous meetings based primarily on sex. When contacting a CD, the principles of clear coding can be helpful and even desirable.

Be careful not to confuse a transgender person with a crossdresser. This can prove highly hurtful to that person.

Fascination with purely sexual expression is not, however, a universal rule driving people to crossdressing. Among those who dress in the clothes of the opposite sex there will always be a certain number of transgender people who have not yet fully discovered their identity and will do so in the nearer or more distant future. The fetish itself also does not objectify a person. If you see any signal in the description, photos or content that interests a given person that may testify to their romantic soul, under no circumstances degrade them with sexual proposals and try to establish a normal, friendly relationship. You will certainly encounter such cases in Warsaw and also in other cities.

A Romantic Relationship with a Transgender Person

Compared with CDs, the expectations of transgender people look completely different. Because of the whole set of often not particularly pleasant experiences connected with the transition process, they usually expect something other than brutal directness. Their unique and above-average attractive physical qualities, which lead to a large number of interested people, also force a different form of contact. On first contact with such a person, try to propose or steer the date in the direction of deep dating - that is, a sincere and extremely personal conversation of the kind you would already have on a subsequent date with a beloved person. You must know that transgender people are often tired of the repeating messages of excessively direct erotic context and such a change is very strongly desired among them.

At the same time, just as among crossdressers, among transgender people you will also find cases of very open people eager for sexual adventures. Before you propose sex, however, make sure that this person expects it and that you are well prepared for it. In Warsaw you can also count on such cases of trans people; nevertheless keep vigilance and respect at the highest level.

What to pay attention to in profiles: whether the person gives a district or preferences regarding discretion, whether they have verification, whether they clearly communicate what they are looking for - dates, friendship or ordinary acquaintance? If you do not find direct information but see something in the profile along the lines of "Ursyn贸w, I expect discretion" - then with a high degree of probability this person is counting on a quick meeting for sex. In a large city like Warsaw it is easier to have superficial contacts - it is worth establishing the pace of the acquaintance and mutual expectations right away.

The capital abounds in queer-friendly clubs and spaces. You will find among others:

  • La Pose Varsovie at Mazowiecka 6/8 - three floors: Club, brasserie and queer artistic stage. A place created by queer people for queer people, with an emphasis on openness and mutual respect. You can have an afternoon coffee, eat lunch, or stay until morning for a wild party. When going there during the day, remember that some people are enjoying their lunch and may not be in the mood for an intensive start to an acquaintance. Approach appropriately and withdraw quickly if you do not feel chemistry. On the other hand, at an evening party on the club floor you can already allow yourself more.
  • Instytut Bar at Prosta 2/14 is a gay bar with a large selection of alcohols and a dark room for play. Regular parties take place here and the atmosphere is very direct. It works well when someone is looking for contact without long preliminaries. Depending on the currently ongoing party, you will meet trans people, crossdressers here, but above all men, including transgender ones. Always check the current party calendar available on their website before going to Instytut.
  • In 艢r贸dmie艣cie and around Plac Zbawiciela you will also find several bars and caf茅s with a mixed, friendly atmosphere. These are not strictly "trans" places, but the presence of transgender people is really noticeable there. You can try talking to queer people in sports clubs at group classes. In ordinary places, however, one should exercise restraint and approach more appropriately than would be the case in a thematic club.

Apart from parties, a good place to meet trans people are support groups and organisations. Although friendships, relationships, and also FwB or even ONS relations form there on a daily basis, you must remember that trans people go there in search of support. Sexual proposals can be very negatively received. When meeting a transgender person at a support-group meeting, maintain the highest level of social sensitivity. Take an interest in the soul and character of that person, and only later in their body. You can find such groups in the following places:

  • Trans-Fuzja Foundation holds regular meetings at its headquarters at ul. Stanis艂awa Noakowskiego 10 lok. 66. No registration is required for the meetings; it is enough to come. This is a space in which one can share experiences and feel understood. These are meetings specifically for transgender people and if you are not one, under no circumstances lie in order to gain access. Say honestly that you would like to meet and support transgender people. Take an interest in their lives, support them and pass on a kind word, and you will meet with a positive reception and catch a few valuable contacts. To hit a meeting, use the meeting calendar available on the Trans-Fuzja website in the "Help" tab.
  • Lambda Warszawa has for years also organised groups and events open to transgender people. Apart from topics bordering on transgenderism, you will also find support groups for bi+, anonymous alcoholics, or those for parents or seniors. The address of the premises may differ depending on the chosen thematic group; you will find it after contacting the organisation. Becoming a volunteer is also an extremely good way of closer contact with transgender people.
  • Additional forms of meetings are walks and marches organised by local collectives, occasional thematic parties announced in local media. A good option for cultural contacts may be a visit to QueerMuzeum, which is a place for calmer meetings with LGBT+ history.

How to Start a Conversation and Build Contact in the Capital

The basic principle will always be naturalness and respect. Remember that transgender people ultimately do not differ at all from others; they have the same plans, dreams and expectations. At the beginning it is worth using impersonal forms, and after a few sentences directly ask about pronouns. In the case of clearly exposed gender characteristics, you can risk pronouns associated with the given gender right away and correct yourself only in the case of an explicit request from that person.

As everywhere, so also in Warsaw never ask right away about sexual matters, about their genitals or sexual partners. These can be embarrassing and can give a very negative reception. Talk about how the currently ongoing event is going, compliment the outfit or make-up. Naturalness, pure intentions and respect always pay off. Thanks to their openness, in Warsaw trans people do not hide from society. Therefore make sure that you also feel comfortable in their company. If you are ashamed to appear with a trans person on the street - it is best to give up right away. Warsaw's transgender women and men will not be willing to cultivate your discretion and hide their person from your family or friends.

When starting a conversation, adjust its content to the situation.

  • At a party: "Hi, it's amazing here at La Pose, do you come here more often? I'm here for the first time"
  • After a support group: "Thanks for your contribution to today's meeting. Your story really interested me, would you maybe like to continue talking over coffee?"
  • Online adapt your message to the profile of the trans person. Proceed gently or boldly, according to their expectations.

Warsaw creates countless opportunities to meet new people. Most residents are also positively disposed toward open and friendly people. To a large extent its population consists of newcomers, which additionally increases their willingness for a first date and also more intimate adventures. Make use of them with prudence and respect, and you will certainly find people willing for interesting acquaintances, including purely sexual ones.
